Imbil Education Weekend, January 2009

Posted by splendacrest at 01:24 AM on January 26, 2009 Comments comments (0)

I felt like I was in Malaysia this past weekend.......

The Far-A-Way Training and Education weekend at Imbil was a real education for the Splendacrest Crew, and for the other 100-odd riders there too! I hadn't realised just how much I love Toowoomba weather through summer until I got out of the car (and air-conditioning) and into the hot humid conditions at Imbil on Saturday morning. By the time we had finished putting up the yards I was over-heated, and feeling quite ill.... as were a number of other people. I literally had to sit down and drink a couple of electrolyte drinks for about half an hour before I started to feel better.... it was incredibly hot and draining.

Five of the Splendacrest riders participated in the TPR training session, with mixed results. I am VERY disappointed that there seems to be a new AERA/QERA rule (that I can't find ANYWHERE) that TPR Stewards must be 18 years of age to officiate. Since I have been involved in this sport the ruling has always been that TPR Stewards must be 16 years of age, however 'apparently' this has changed with absolutely no advice received from AERA or QERA as to when, where, or how it was changed. Over the years all of my young riders have been encouraged to complete (and use) their TPR training the moment they turned 16 years old...... this "new" rule will certainly knock out a pool of willing and enthusiastic young people from assisting in one of the ways that they can at a ride in the future. Shame!

Anyway, back to the ride..........

A couple of heavy showers did nothing to cool the conditions, but just added to the humidity and general level of discomfort. The horses were sweating just standing in their yards, and we were all wilting fast too. I was amazed that there were so many horses at the ride, as January in Qld is not very conducive to endurance training... hence the reason I love the altitude and climate of Toowoomba!

But of course, Bob Sample had it all sorted..... plenty of water on track for both drinking and strapping purposes, a great crew of officials with many many years of experience, and lots of advice and assistance being given out. Bob had also arranged for the local shop to stock more ice than they would normally sell in a year, and an early opening time on Sunday morning.... talk about pre-empting needs! Thank you Bob, from all of us!

Ride day brought with it stinking heat, heavy hot rain, incredibly hot conditions, sunburn, wet wrinkly feet, constantly wet clothes and boots, steam rising off the grass, hot hot hot horses, high core temperatures, difficult strapping conditions, lots of ice water being applied in the heavy rain (!), and superhuman efforts to get horses through the Vetting arena.

This was a real education weekend for 4 of my new riders, and 3 young horses, who were all doing their very first ride. Marcia Burger (from Sth Africa) rode Splendacrest Zhateau, Lisa Roosen (from The Netherlands) rode Chevy, Alissa Tulk rode Pete, Steph Tulk rode Splendacrest Ulysses, and Kristan Kershaw escorted all of them around on my young stallion, Splendacrest Zafire. All were successful in completing the 40km ride, with great recoveries!

Tarni Kittel rode Zayelle's Showgirl, owned by Bruce Everson of Tenterfield, in her first 80km ride, to 5th Junior placing, while the infamous G rode Splendacrest Sayirah (owned by Shane Hopkins) to also complete the AERA 80km ride. Although the strapping conditions in the heat of the day really challenged us, both mares made a good showing and really did us proud!

I must thank Tanya Stoffel of Rotan Arabians for her friendship and assistance during the weekend.... and congratulations to Lisa and Wade who both completed the FEI* 80km ride well too!!! A huge congratulations to the Ra Endurance team as well.... Matthew Gadsby placed 1st Heavyweight and BC and Marion Lengronne placed 3rd Middleweight in the AERA 80km ride, while Paul Lengronne placed 5th Open in the FEI* 80km. Well done all!

And thanks to Shane Hopkins who, as usual, was the backbone of the Splendacrest team. And thanks also to Ted Fitzgerald who stayed at home this weekend and fed all my horses here..... great effort guys! My youngest rider, Britt Geddes, also accompanied us and was the greatest strapper ever!! Thanks Britt!!

All in all this was one of the most difficult rides we have ever attended, but our results speak to the teamwork and dedication that the Splendacrest riders put into everything they do. I am very proud of everyone, and all our wonderful horses!

World Endurance Championship race in Malaysia

Posted by splendacrest at 08:46 PM on November 09, 2008 Comments comments (0)

The World Endurance Championship (WEC) race over 160km was held in Malaysia on Friday 8th/Saturday 9th November.  The race commenced at 5:30pm local time on Friday, with the winner completing early Saturday morning.

ESPN Star covered the race, and I was able to watch the entire thing live!  Although there was a huge storm, with lightning strikes which knocked out the transmission for a time, the coverage was excellent, and proved that endurance CAN be a spectator sport after all!

USA saddlemaker Dave Kaden's commentary was good, as was the Malaysian commentator Peter Abisheganaden.  It was also good to hear from Steph Teeter, Zulu and various other interesting people.  The effort made by ESPN Star to do the 'live cross' to interview participants was excellent, and I'm sure that better methods of reporting endurance riding will be found in the future.  But for this effort, I'd like to congratulate ESPN Star!

The Australian team lost 4 out of our 6 riders during the race, with Derek Armitage vetting out after the first leg, Matthew Sample vetting out after the 4th leg, Brook Sample withdrawing after the 5th leg, and Meg Wade vetting out after the 5th leg.  Penny Toft went on to complete in 18th placing, and Kristie McGaffin took out the 19th place.

The race winner was Maria Mercedes Alvarez Ponton of Spain, riding "Nobby" in a time of 8:48:06, a huge effort in the heat and humidity of Malaysia!  The individual Silver Medal went to Augustin Vita of Argentina, riding barack Ibn Al Tamah in a time of 8:57:55, and the individual Bronze Medal went to Sultan Ahmed Sultan Bin Sulayem of the UAE riding Tazoul El Parry in 9:09:31.

In the Teams event, the Gold Medal went to the UAE team, the Silver to Qatar, and the Bronze to Bahrain.

Two of the four horses on the Gold Medal winning UAE team commenced their endurance careers at Splendacrest Endurance Training!  Splendacrest Kamouflage finished in 4th position, ridden by HH Shk Majid Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, in a time of 9:14:42, while Zakah Zahara finished in 6th position, ridden by Mubarak Kalifa Bin Shafya, in a time of 9:21:39.

The grey horse in the front of the field is Zakah Zahara, leading the pack out at the start of the race.  Splendacrest Kamouflage is the chestnut horse behind and just to the left of Zak.

Zakah Zahara (number 120) and Splendacrest Kamouflage (number 6) on track at the World Endurance Championship race.

Terrific Tenterfield ride

Posted by splendacrest at 06:02 PM on October 26, 2008 Comments comments (0)
The Terrific Tenterfield ride base is actually not in Tenterfield!  It is in a beautiful clearing in the Girard State Forest, about 40km east of Tenterfield, with basic facilities, lots of shaded camping areas, good water supply, long-drop toilets, and a great endurance club full of enthusiastic and happy people!

There was plenty of water on track, not an ounce of bitumen to be seen, and even the weather was kind to us...... all the necessary items to make up a great ride.   OH....... AND...... a discounted nomination fee for early nominations, AND a choice of well-thought-out and appropriate completion prizes!

We travelled from Toowoomba on Saturday morning, arriving at the ridebase by about 1pm local time (and I had to think hard all weekend to convert to NSW's daylight savings time, 'cos I can't figure out how to easily change my watch!).  We had a fabulous spot near the Vetting area, with shade for the horses and a tap nearby....  heaven!

The Splendacrest Team did very well, with John Dugan taking out 1st Heavyweight placing on Performance Park Lady Kharisma in 6:16, Rod Strahan placing 4th in the Heavyweight division on his lovely boy Shardell Silverado, Renae Kuhn placed 7th Lightweight on Catherine McAlpine's Starab gelding Splitter's Creek Bundy, Amanda Powell placed 15th Lightweight on the gorgeous Aloha Rain Dance (owned by Lisa Stone), Angela Head placed 12th Middleweight on Bourhani Albaraq (owned by Hanna Bourdeaux), and Tarni Kittel placed 20th Middleweight on Aloha Ishmael (owned by John Dugan).

Out of these completions, Shardell Silverado, Splitter's Creek Bundy and Bourhani Albaraq all completed their 3rd 80km rides, allowing them to move into the Open Horse ranks next year!  Aloha Ishmael and Aloha Rain Dance both were successful in their first 80km rides, with the 16hh+ Aloha Rain Dance astounding all and sundry with her fabulous heartrates:  35/38/39!

Gerard Bou riding Bourhani Olympus was our only casualty of the weekend, with a slight lameness issue at the end of the ride.... but Gerard was in high spirits (although exhausted) at the finish, having had a great ride on the magnificent "Olly".

My thanks must go to Robert Kuhn, Lisa Stone and Shane Hopkins, who all worked very hard over the weekend to strap the horses and make our weekend more enjoyable.

Well, that's out last ride for 2008, and what a year it's been!  Some statistics for your perusal:  During 2008 Splendacrest Endurance Training has started 9 new horses and 8 new riders in the sport, has competed in over 100 rides for a total of 7747 kilometres, with an 86% completion rate.

Bring on 2009!!

Tom Quilty Gold Cup 160km, 2008

Posted by splendacrest at 05:42 AM on September 22, 2008 Comments comments (1)

WOW!

The 2008 Nanango Tom Quilty Gold Cup ride has been run and won by Meg Wade on China Doll!  With over 200 entries, dozens of volunteers, hundreds of spectators, and a cast of thousands of strappers/crew/kids/families/supporters, this ride will go down in history as one of the most exciting Quiltys EVER!

The Splendacrest Team arrived at the Nanango Showgrounds on the Wednesday before the event, and settled the horses in.  During the day our foreign riders also arrived, to be amazed at the scene before them!  Takeshi Ito, Satomi Kitamura, and Riyo Noyori (all from Japan), and Kim Fuess and Charisse Glenn (from USA), were joined by Liz Cullam (from Western Australia), and welcomed to the Splendacrest camp.  And what a campsite we had!  A large marquee, complete with flashing coloured lights and all the comforts of home, together with a secure and well-laid-out yard area for the horses made up the campsite.

Wednesday evening saw everyone welcomed to the 2008 Quilty with a cocktail party for our friends and neighbours, and much fun was had by all (along with a few laughs)!   Thursday dawned bright and warm:  just a taste of what was to come.  Everyone sorted out their horses and went out for a ride to look at the last phase of the track... a 14km loop.  During the day on Thursday there was also the opportunity for riders to attend a series of lectures hosted by the Australian Endurance Squad, which several of my riders took up and commented on the value of doing so.

On Thursday evening everyone was invited to the AERA Awards ceremony and a dance party to follow, with a very good band playing.  By all accounts this was a most successful evening, and the excitement continued when a stoush with a group of local hoons broke out.  But all ended well, and the music and dancing continued on into the wee hours.

Friday morning was also quite warm, and the final nominations were taken care of.  The entire secretarial team put together by the ride organisers was professional, friendly, warm and welcoming to everyone, and the nomination process proceded very smoothly.  Then it was off to the pre-ride Vetting, with Dr Brian Sheahan overseeing a group of about 20 Veterinarians from all over the country.  A smooth operation was managed by Chief Chief Steward Tom McCormack, ably assisted by Dorte Colja and Jeff Bonham amongst others.

The entire showgrounds then quietened down somewhat as the riders and strappers all tried to get some much-needed sleep prior to the ride commencing at 4am Saturday.  However I also noted many riders up and bright-eyed by 2am, waiting nervously for the start time!

I relied heavily on my crew of helpers to assist with the saddling and preparation of the 11 horses in my care.  Thanks to Sam Dobson, Alissa and Steph Tulk, Jess Hewitt, Renae and Robert Kuhn, Mal Caldwell, Jan Kittel, Angela Head, Britt and Liz Geddes, Yuko Crease, Diane Wilson, Kristan Kershaw, Gesina and Horst Krause, Deb Jewell, and Kim's friend Cherry, for all capably carrying out their assigned duties throughout the ride!  We couldn't have made it without you all!

And they were off!!!!  Out of the brightly-lit arena and into the darkness of the early morning, over 200 horses quietly departed on their long and gruelling day.  The first two phases of the ride ended at an away Vet-check called "Treeby's", which was at the top of a long and tiring climb for both horses and riders.  Here we met our charges as they arrived, and were successful in getting all but one horse through the second Vet check.  Unfortunately Liz Cullam, riding Bullarto Fiorelli, was vetted out after 70kms with a slightly elevated heart rate (due to a VERY excited horse!).  The ride organisers had all the transportation of horses back to base camp very well organised, and Fiorelli was floated back to be checked out by the Treatment Vet there.  All was good however, and she was pronounced well and happy and returned immediately to her yard for a big feed!

The third phase of the ride returned to the Nanango showgrounds, and here we had our first withdrawal of the day, with 16-year-old Lilonda Count Richael (Ricky) looking a bit tired after doing 100kms in the heat!  So unfortunately my great friend, Kim Fuess of the USA, only experienced part of the 2008 Tom Quilty!  Oh, but let me mention the heat!!!  It was HOT!  Very hot!  There were several casualties after the second and third legs due to the heat, and the water provided on track and at the Vet checks was used at a great rate of knots!  After all the remaining riders came back in off the fourth leg we suffered another Vet out when Aratahnes Galaxy (Chevy) was lame in the trot out, therefore knocking John Dugan out of the ride.   And it was at this stage that Riyo Noyori decided that she wasn't able to continue her ride, and therefore the great little Bulgari Bentley was withdrawn (looking great, and obviously able to continue easily!!).

I was just about to send our Japanese riders off onto the fifth leg, when a storm warning was posted, so I decided to hold them in camp until the storm passed, and BOY! was I glad I did!   The mother of all storms was suddenly upon us, and we all huddled under the marquee throughout the lightning and thunder, hail and rain that swirled all around us.  For over an hour we were deluged, and our thoughts and prayers were with those riders out on track with their horses.  I was extremely concerned because my two youngest riders, Tarni and Ingrid, were out there along with Charisse.  But then we heard excited screaming approaching through the storm, and Tarni and Ingrid appeared out of the rain with their horses, Splendacrest Dryad and Shaah, having finished the last leg of the ride in the storm.  We hastily put the horses into a secure yard, and then left them to their own devices....... no strapping measures taken, just hoping that they would survive the storm!   The girls were soaked and freezing (along with the rest of us), but that didn't stop their excitement at having completed the 160km course.

The rain finally abated, and with it came the news that Charisse was on her way in off track, so we eagerly awaited her arrival at the finish line.  She arrived with stories of lightning striking close by, and the biggest storm she'd ever seen!  Apparently she had decided to get off her mount, Bacchante Silver Lace, and run along the track to keep warm!  During the storm the Vetting area was totally closed down for 1.5 hours, and the ride officials decided to suspend the ride for that period of time, adding 1.5 hours to the total riding time to be allowed for completion.

We were finally able to vet the three horses through, and they all passed with flying colours.  So, Tarni and Ingrid had attained the coveted silver buckle of a Quilty completion!  Charisse still had the final leg of 14kms to do, as did Gerard Bou on Splendacrest Fiesta (owned by Shigeru Ogawa of Japan).  Both arrived back at the ride base on happy healthy horses, and both then vetted through easily.  Splendacrest rider Amanda Powell had been riding Summit Park Ras for Lisa Stone of Marburg Manor, and this combination also completed at this stage.  And we were now up to a total of 5 completions!

The remaining two Japanese riders, Takeshi Ito and Satomi Kitamura, took a little longer to complete the last two legs, but also arrived back at ride base with healthy happy horses, and both vetted through very well at the finish..... another 2 completions to add to our total!!!

So we finished the ride with 2 Vet Outs, 2 Withdrawals, and 6 Buckles from the horses in our camp, with an additional buckle gained by Amanda Powell on her borrowed mount.  Another Japanese rider, Yukinobi Horiuchi riding Pinfeather owned by Alwyn Torrenbeek, was also successful in gaining his first Quilty buckle!   All in all, a very good result, and one that I am very proud of!

At the presentation ceremony on Sunday afternoon, the final results were posted, with our riders placing as follows:

Ingrid Ambrosiussen riding Shaah:  4th Junior in 14:03
Tarnia Kittel riding Splendacrest Dryad:  13th Middleweight in 14:03
Gerard Bou riding Splendacrest Fiesta: 26th Middleweight in 16:20
Amanda Powell riding Summit Park Ras: 9th Lightweight in 16:22
Charisse Glenn riding Bacchante Silver Lace:  29th Middleweight in 18:06
Takeshi Ito riding Splendacrest Perfection:  50th Middleweight in 21:53
Satomi Kitamura riding Mt Eerwah Silver Mariner: 23rd Lightweight in 21:53

I couldn't have managed this ride at all without the help of Shane Hopkins, who drove two loads of horses to Nanango and back home again!  Thanks Shane!

Sparkler Ride 2008

Posted by splendacrest at 03:36 AM on September 07, 2008 Comments comments (0)
Well, I didn't even go to the Sparkler this year! Due to having 12 horses at home needing work before the Quilty in two weeks, I decided to stay home and concentrate on them this year. However that's not to say that Splendacrest wasn't represented at the ride! Oh no, we couldn't have that, could we??!!!

So, three horses set off for the ride in the capable hands of Splendacrest riders! Rod Strahan and Ted Fitzgerald packed up Shardell Jarrod (owned by Prutirat Serireongrith of Thailand) and Shardell Silverado (owned by Rod Strahan) and joined up with Renae Kuhns, who was entrusted with Splitters Creek Bundy (owned by Catherine McAlpine). This happy little camp of three were capably overseen by Robert Kuhn... chief strapper, bottle washer and gofer... thanks Robert!

Another Splendacrest rider, Gerard Bou, also attended the ride at the request of Kate Gadsby from Ra Endurance in order to ride the gorgeous Country Gentleman, aka 'Tellus'.

And once again I can proudly report a 100% completion rate for the Splendacrest Team! From all accounts it was a great ride, with lovely soft-ish tracks and good marking. Bob Sample, Nev Badman and the huge band of volunteers who always make sure that the Far-A-Way Club rides are so well organised, deserve another pat on the back! So, guys, consider yourself patted! And many many thanks from our little group.

Brymaroo ride 2008

Another weekend away, but this one much closer to home... only an hour's drive.... WOW!  It certainly was nice to get home this afternoon at a reasonable hour, even after waiting for the Presentations.

Brymaroo is a flat track, with several gullies that spring out of nowhere, and is not to be under-estimated.  Saturday was FREEZING cold, with high swirling winds, and everyone just trying to find a wind-break somewhere.  Sunday dawned cold, but NO WIND!  Heavenly!  And then it started to warm up, becoming quite balmy and bright..... and then it got hot.

The Veterinary team was headed up by Celia Dodd... so nice to see Celia back Vetting on a regular basis!  There were LOTS of Volunteers backing up the Toowoomba Club members, and everything worked very smoothly.  Dorte Colja came down from North Qld to be the Chief Steward.... and it was her birthday on Saturday... that's dedication!

The Splendacrest Team had another excellent weekend, with Ingrid Ambrosiussen riding Shaah to 3rd Junior placing in 4:54.  Tarni Kittel finished the ride on Splendacrest Dryad, gaining =7th Middleweight placing.  Kristan Kershaw rode Bullarto Fiorelli (owned by Judith Pascoe) to 9th Heavyweight placing, also escorting our Japanese guest around the track.  Riyo Noyori rode Bulgari Bentley (owned by Debra Gabriel) to =7th Lightweight placing.  Our one casualty was the evergreen Ricky (who will turn 16 next month!) who went out with a minor lameness after the first leg.

Ted Fitzgerald rode Connie (owned by Kate Gadsby of Ra Endurance) to 6th Heavyweight placing, and Angela Head completed in =4th Middleweight position on Jazzy (also owned by Kate Gadsby).  Thanks Kate, for your confidence in the Splendacrest riders!  Congratulations also to the Ra Endurance Team.... who once again proved that they are a force to be reckoned with in Australian endurance.

Thanks to Shane, Renae, Yuko, Lisa, Trevor, and everyone else who helped me this weekend... your efforts are always greatly appreciated!

Green Valley Tingha ride 2008

Posted by splendacrest at 08:58 PM on August 17, 2008 Comments comments (0)
OH BOY!  What a weekend we've just had!!!

5.5 hours drive from Splendacrest is the fantastical world of Green Valley Farm, where Clare Fleming and her trusy band of volunteers (over 80 in all!!!) put on the Tingha ride.  This ride was cancelled last year due to the EI fiasco, so we've all been hanging out to get back to Tingha for 2 years now!  And what a ride it was!!!!!!!!

The 'normal' 10km, 40km and 80km rides were added to this year with the Challenge ride of 110km.... 3 legs of 50km, 30km, 30km.

First across the line in the 110km was junior rider Jasmine Shields, who took home the perpetual trophy (sponsored by Splendacrest).  As Clare was busy running the ride, she graciously asked young Ingrid Ambrosiussen to ride her lovely mare 'Regina' (Birramalee Queen of Hearts), and Ingrid placed in 2nd Junior position, and then took out the Best Conditioned Horse Award as well..... which pleased Clare no end!

In the 80km ride Tarni Kittel was also privledged to ride Clare's other horse Manguera Koran, and rode the entire way with Jess Hewitt on Splendacrest Perfection (owned by Shane Hopkins), to finish in =1st Mwt place in 5:00, =1st across the line, and =1st Best Conditioned!  What a great result for these two Splendacrest girls!  Thanks Clare for placing your trust in my young riders!

We were graced with 3 visitors from Thailand at this ride, and all 3 completed the 80km in 7:11, with huge smiles all 'round too!

Prutirat Serireongrith finished in =13th Mwt position on his lovely horse Shardell Prince Ali, Wipawan Pawitayalarp riding Shardell Galazan and Supanee Chaiwiroj riding Mt Eerwah Silver Mariner finished in =8th Lwt position, with Wipawan then being award the Novice Rider prize by the Vet Panel!!

Rod Strahan rode with our Thai visitors on Shardell Jarrod, and Ted Fitzgerald rode Shardell Silverado for =3rd Hwt placing.

Angela Head rode Splitters Creek Bundy (owned by Catherine McAlpine) to 16th Mwt placing and Renae Kuhn rode Naadem (owned by Liz & James Christensen) to 10th Lwt placing.

AND.... Britt Geddes rode 'Chevy' in the 40km ride to a strong completion, being accompanied by Dallas Blakely...... a HUGE thanks to Dallas for taking this great 11 yr old kid around!!!!

Thanks also must go to Gerard Bou, who gave up his weekend to strap for the team.... thanks G!  So, all in all, a 100% completion rate for the Splendacrest Team!  Yes, I'm pretty pleased!

But what an effort was made by the team on the organising committee!  Tarnia, Clare, Mick.....  You are all stars in my mind!  A GREAT location, a GREAT ride, GREAT volunteers, GREAT catering, GREAT camping facilities, GREAT completion prizes, GREAT smiles, GREAT fun!

And another huge thanks to Steph and Alissa Tulk and Kristan Kershaw..... the girls that were left at home to take care of the horses here!!  Great job ladies!!

THANKS to all of you.................

Murrumba ride

Posted by splendacrest at 09:05 AM on August 03, 2008 Comments comments (0)
Home to a *mild* evening in Toowoomba (the first for a looong time), after a big weekend at Woodford with the Murrumba Endurance Club's 100km and 47km events.

And wow, what a weekend!  The weather was excellent, the track was excellent, and the whole weekend was just, well, excellent!!

There were about 80 riders in the 100km event, which started at 4am today, and which was won in the blistering time of 5:12.  The three leg lengths were 40, 33, and 27kms, and everyone kept commenting throughout the day about how great the footing was, and how nice the track was to ride.  The 47km event was held over 2 legs of 27 and 20kms, and again was happily ridden by newcomers and old-timers alike.

Our team had another great weekend, with Ingrid Ambrosiussen taking out 2nd Junior placing in 5:52 on the beautiful Performance Park Lady Kharisma (owned by John Dugan).  This lovely mare really looked great throughout the ride, vetting through in under 5 minutes on each leg.... with the new(ish) system of being able to vet at any time within the 30 minutes really suiting her style!

Our two Japanese guests were also successful in the 100km event, with Takeshi Ito riding Splendacrest Perfection (owned by Shane Hopkins), and Shigeru Ogawa riding his own mare, Splendacrest Fiesta, to equal 18th Middleweight placing in 7:57.  Gerard Bou (or *G* as he is known to his friends and admirers) mounted on Splendacrest Dryad, escorted these two gentlemen around, commenting that the track was eminently suited to novice horses.

Although Tarni had to withdraw after the 2nd leg of the ride due to a slight sprain, both mare and rider will return to fight another day!  And the grin on Ted Fitzgerald's face after completing the 47km ride on Shardell Silverado (owned by Rod Strahan) will take a while to fade!  This beautiful big gelding certainly turned quite a few heads over the weekend, with his flowing silver mane and tail, his pure white coat, and the big star on his rump really being noted!

Amanda Powell had another great ride on Summit Park Ras, owned by Lisa Stone, and is really developing a bond with this very nice stallion.

It was also great to see new endurance devotee Gesina Krause complete her first 40km ride on her lovely mare, Flair.  Well done, Ges!  And thanks, Horst, for your strapping efforts!  While I'm on the subject...... I had the assistance of my two youngest riders this weekend in the strapping area, and both performed admirably!  Thanks Britt (aged 11) and Steph (aged 14)!  You did great!!

And a huge thanks to Shane Hopkins, Trevor Copland, and Yuko Crease for strapping above and beyond the call!

Another thanks must go to the Murrumba Club members and volunteers, including all the TPR Stewards, the Rural Fire Brigade, the Vets, and the ride committee members.  This was a great ride, it was well run, and it was a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere all 'round.

And yet another thanks to the Splendacrest team members that stayed home and fed my horses over the weekend!!  Kristan and Liz.... you're worth your weight in gold!!

See you all at Tingha in a couple of weeks!

Wunderful Widgee

Posted by splendacrest at 08:05 AM on July 21, 2008 Comments comments (0)
Suffice it to say that the Widgee ride was, as usual, excellent!  The organising committee was definitely committed, and the ride base was fab.  The Widgee ride is not to be underestimated, with a great track on offer which includes hills, more hills, and views to die for!  The high levels of rainfall over previous weeks ensured that the going was soft, although slippery in places.

The Splendacrest Team welcomed 4 Japanese riders for this ride:  2 in the 80km and 2 in the 40km.  ALL WERE SUCCESSFUL!  And all had a great time, commenting on the friendliness of the people they met and the beautiful scenery they rode through.

The Widgee ride was the third ride in the Burnett Series of 3, sponsored by Clinton Cole of endurohorsebrokers.com.au.  Gayle Holmes had offered young Ingrid Ambrosiussen the opportunity to ride 'Shanti' for these three rides, and both Gayle and Ingrid were successful in completing all three..... with Gayle in 1st Middleweight position and Ingrid in 1st Junior position for the series.  Congratulations, and thanks, to Gayle for enabling this fabulous result!

Kristan Kershaw rode Shardell Galazan (owned by Pun Serireongrith of Thailand), and Gerard Bou rode Naadem (owned by Liz and Jamese Christensen) in the 80km, capably escorting Mayumi Sekiguchi on the wonderful Chevy and Hitomi Yaguramaki on the evergreen Ricky.  Both Japanese ladies enjoyed their rides on these beautiful horses.

Jodie Patterson (on holidays from Dubai) rode Bourhani Albaraq (owned by Hanna Bourdeaux of Germany), for a solid completion in this boy's second 80km ride.  Thanks Jodie!  Amanda Powell was mounted on Summit Park Ras (owned by Lisa Stone) for another completion, paving the way for a Quilty bid!  Thanks Lisa!!!!!!!!!

In the 40km ride Renae Kuhn rode Splitters Creek Bundy (owned by Catherine McAlpine), and escorted Yurie Ito on Splendacrest Ulysses and Ikuo Isagawa on Bacchante Silver Lace, with 3 completions as the result!  Thanks Renae!

As many of you have heard, John Dugan had a little fall in the 40km ride, off his new horse Aloha Ishmael.  After being air-lifted out of the forestry to Nambour Hospital, he underwent a series of tests and was pronounced 'fit to continue' and released the following morning.  John had just come from winning the 120km ride at the Qld State Champs the weekend prior to Widgee, so this incident came as a bit of a shock to us all!  But all's well that ends well.

All in all, a great weekend at Widgee, with many many thanks going to the ride organisers and the volunteers who made it all happen.  And thanks also to Yuko and Tarni and Jess and Shane, who were invaluable throughout the entire weekend!
